This body of journalistic work by Derwin Pereira presents a slice of history and a glimpse of the future. The articles here, published in The Straits Times, were written when history was being made in Indonesia, the United States and the Middle East. The fall of President Suharto ended authoritarianism in Indonesia irrevocably. The election of Barack Obama as America’s first black President revealed what is possible in a democracy. The Iraq War showed how dramatically change can come to a dictatorship. What these events, and others, signify is a future in which the popular will is triumphant. States and markets will have to come to terms with this new reality. Other articles, which will be featured here as they appear, will seek to give a glimpse of that future.
